The reset button

My head has had another reset. Im not sure if its because of Matt kicking me in the ass, or if it’s the time of year (I had a similar reset about this time last year) but whatever it is, Ill take it. Last night was the third Bear Creek STXC race of the series, and I showed up ready to go. I forgot about any expectations but did resolve to push myself into the red-zone (read::puke) and ride with everything I could muster. The course was layed out on both sides of the road and the start would take us around about ¾ of the lake to separate us out before hitting the singletrack. I don’t know how many starters there were, though. Maybe about a dozen. It didn’t matter becaue when Chuck said go, I went. My start could have been better with a different gear, so I snapped a few up and stood to get a few good cranks in to hang with the front group. Matt, Gunner, Luby, Evan, Dave and I took off with the remainder of the riders behind us. I tucked in behind Luby and Gunner when the lead group split off and hung on his wheel. Luby is one strong dude who knows how to choose lines. I hung onto Luby and Gunner as they traded spaces a few times for two and a half laps but eventually started drifting back when I bobbled a little in the climb up the back of the lake area. No matter, I wasn’t gong to pass those two anyway but in any case I noticed someone trying to bridge up to me. With my HR pegged and some verp in my mouth I stomped on my pedals to clear the parking lot to give myself some breathing room up the final climb and rock garden sections. I don’t know how close he got to me, but what I do know is by the time I was crossing the road for the second time I was away, and felt like I was flying with a great big smile on my face. Jess and Gray cheered each lap and I was proud to have put on a good show.

Round two was a gravel-lot miss and out with a kayak finale and was pure win all the way around. We had a staggered start to give everyone a chance and somewhere in there my front wheel washed out. I made my best cross-remount and kept going but my knee/foot got a little jacked up in the crash so I just didn’t have much left. Matt tried to pass me, but hung up on my rear wheel and went down himself. Somehow he thought hugging my rear wheel would keep him upright, but all it really did was give him some good raspberry burns on the inside of his arm. Ill need to make sure I hook him up with some tasty beverages at Marysville to ease that pain.

All in all I don’t really think I was much faster than I have been all year, but my head is good and the fire is definitely lit for cross season. Now when I ride I will honestly remember the words of wisdom given to me by Vegan Rob- “I don’t think you’ve found the next level of sufferning yet.” I still don’t think Ive found that level, but now Im feel like Im ready to try.

Remember...this is all just for fun

This year started out with a very well thought-out plan. Weaknesses were assessed, goals were made, and workouts were mapped out. The focus was clear, get as fast as I can for short-event racing as possible. It included a mix of winter base riding time, spring and early summer XC and STXC racing, summer crits and hard intervals all geared to get better at cross. Somewhere in there I forgot to have fun so I have been focused on changing that. I am trying new things and the latest new thing on my radar is the Steelman Triathlon . I figure it this way- if I can get through the 800 meter swim without drowning I should be able to finish in a respectable time. Ive started running again and can already handle the 5k run (although my legs and knee still hurt a bit from it) and the 13 mile bike section is something that I know I can already do without problems. Even cooler, Sue (virtual little sister and wife to Cody) from Swim-In Zone is planning on doing it too, so I will have some company out there.

So with that, my plan has officially gone completely out the window. I am re-focusing on overall fitness and fun so hopefully along the way I will still get faster. At the very least I will lose a bit more weight so that’s only going to help. Once we get into mid-august I will turn back to the ‘plan’ with intervals and cross-specific training, but until then Im going to make a game out of it. Heres to FUN!

Ride fast, take chances….and I guess run and swim a little too.

/Dan

Listen to what it is trying to tell you

My goal at the start of the week was 12.5 hours. My goal today? Ride a little. What was supposed to be my biggest week so far has ended up being a rest week. I should get some decent volume (10 hours) but it has all been pretty sporadic, filled with cross training, and overall pretty low intensity. Why, you ask? Well, after the big fixie day last Sunday my knee has been bothering me again. Add that to a dragging fatigue and what I think was a low-grade flu and I really haven’t been up to it this week. Whenever I get sick and/or tired my emotions, willpower, and motivation go right out the window. So since my body told me to rest, I did. Since my body told me to eat, I did. Since my heart told me to play with my son and have long deep conversations with my wife, I did. I must say, it was a good week in many ways, but riding wasn’t one of them. I do have next Monday off, so maybe Ill count Sunday as a +1 day for an 8 day training schedule and get my volume there. Base 3 starts one week early.

Week 2

11 hours

71 miles combined MTB/road work

NO time on the trainer

One slightly tweaked knee (but recovering nicely)

One recovering knee that is still a bit fatigued (IT band issue knee)

-3 pounds

Well folks, Im back to my racing weight from last season already, and I think Ill be able to keep marching towards the 180lb goal. If the weight keeps melting off at 2-3lbs/week I will see 180lbs by March and which will time nicely with the increasing intensity levels planned for that period. My body is adjusting to the base workloads, but I am feeling some fatigue because of it. Good news is Im not feeling roasted, just stretched, so that is where I think I want to be at this point. Need to do enough work to push myself, but keep it just on this side of injured/sick/burned out.

Next week will probably be one of my biggest volume weeks ever. No, Im not talking about the times where we have done MTB camping trips where we would be in the woods for 6-8 hours each day for 3+ days…those rides were filled with resting and eating and sightseeing. No, I am talking about real training time where I am doing real ‘work’ riding to improve, so here it comes. The only thing that may be an issue is weather, so I may be doing more hours than I want to inside. Luckily I havent had to go that route yet, but I think I may be due this week. We will see. Here we go~

-Ride fast, take chances
